With conventional cytology, the collected cells are placed directly on a slide. With liquid-based cytology, the sample is first preserved in a container with a special liquid before laboratory processing.
Neither method should be presented as universally better. The relevant option depends on the purpose of the test, previous results and any professional recommendation.
As a general guide, schedule the test outside your menstrual period and avoid vaginal intercourse, tampons, douches, creams or vaginal medicines during the previous 48 hours.
