During the test, a small sample of cells is collected from the cervix and placed directly onto a slide for analysis. It can help identify cellular changes that require professional interpretation or follow-up.
Whether you need the test and how often it should be performed depend on factors such as your age, medical history and previous results. If you are unsure whether this is the right time, you can begin with a medical assessment.
Cervical cytology is a screening and follow-up test. On its own, it cannot confirm every cause of gynecologic symptoms and does not replace a consultation when symptoms are present.
Try to schedule your appointment when you are not menstruating, and avoid sexual intercourse, vaginal medications, creams or tampons for 48 hours beforehand. If you have irregular bleeding, pain, unusual discharge or are using a local treatment, let us know before booking.
The team will confirm the instructions that apply to your situation. Do not stop any prescribed medication without consulting the professional who prescribed it.
Before we begin, we will explain the procedure. A speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix, and the sample is collected with an instrument designed for this purpose.
Sample collection is usually brief. Some patients feel pressure or short-lived discomfort; experiences vary, and you may ask us to pause or explain what is happening at any time.
We will explain the expected process for receiving your report. Every result should be reviewed alongside your medical history, symptoms and previous tests.
A finding does not always mean that a disease is present, and a result without abnormalities does not rule out every gynecologic condition. Follow-up is determined individually.
