Transvaginal and abdominal pelvic ultrasounds are not interchangeable versions of the same test. If you have an order, share it when booking; if not, we can guide you toward the appropriate type of appointment.

The ultrasound does not replace a gynecology consultation or, on its own, confirm the cause of pain, bleeding or other symptoms.

Preparation and privacy

Preparation is usually different from that for an abdominal pelvic ultrasound and may involve arriving with an empty bladder. Always confirm the specific instruction with the team before your appointment.

You will have privacy to prepare and can raise any questions or concerns. The examination is performed only after it has been explained and you have given your consent.

What happens during the ultrasound

The professional carefully inserts a covered and lubricated probe designed to obtain images of gynecologic structures. Its position may be adjusted gently to view different areas.

Experiences vary from person to person. You may feel pressure or discomfort, and you should let us know so we can pause, explain or adapt the process whenever possible.

Interpreting the images in context

The report describes what was observed during the examination, but its meaning depends on the reason for the evaluation, your medical history and other clinical information.

Bring previous reports or images if you have them. They may help with comparison, although they do not replace the current assessment or guarantee a specific conclusion.
